Wage Range $17.62-$23.00

SUMMARY

Under supervision of the Parks Manager, or Asst. Parks Manager, this position performs a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, design, installation and construction work in the City Parks, Recreation Center, and the planters on Main Street.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor and assists other departments in the performance of semi-skilled and skilled work.
  • Work with hand tools necessary for flower bed preparation, weed control, and Main Street planters.
  • May assist with irrigation repairs.
  • Design, install, and maintain native and ornamental plants in parks, apply pesticides and fertilizers to ornamental plants, and assist daily in parks maintenance.
  • May drive pickups, one-ton dump truck, operate hand power equipment including rototillers, weed/turf trimmers, and hedge trimmers.
  • May be required to prune and care for trees on Main Street and parks.
  • Will perform a wide variety of other unskilled maintenance and construction work as required, such as landscaping of park areas and city buildings.

OTHER DUTIES INCLUDE: performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Knowledge of horticulture, gardening, or related fields.  Master gardener a plus.
  • Knowledge of work practices in the operation of light equipment and power tools and in safe methods of performing maintenance and construction.
  • Ability to perform moderate/heavy physical work and to lift and carry 50 pounds regularly and 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to stand, climb, kneel, twist, grasp, reach, ride, walk, sit, bend, crawl, push, pull and perform a variety of similar body movements.
  • Possess hand/eye/foot coordination to operate equipment.
  • Ability to talk and hear in person and by radio.
  • Ability to see and read instructions, prepare reports, and make repairs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and general public.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • Must successfully pass a background check and pre-employment drug test.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to completion of high school and six months of general gardening or landscaping labor experience or master gardener preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Proficient in English. Other languages helpful.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Basic Math skills.

  • Ability to perform moderate physical work and lift 50 pounds and to occasionally lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
  • Possess hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to perform rescues, maintenance & first-aid.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, twist, reach, bend, grasp, kneel and perform a variety of similar body movements; ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
