Starting $20.44 Range $20.44-$27.25

SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of the Chief of Police or designee, will perform duties in customer service, receiving, storing, maintaining, and releasing of a wide variety of confiscated property and evidence.  Major responsibility is safeguarding and maintaining the integrity of all evidence and a chain of command of custody in accordance with state laws, City ordinances, and departmental policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsibilities include excellent customer service, records management, receiving, cataloging, securing, maintaining and releasing evidence received from crime scenes; receiving and cataloging and maintaining found property.
  • Ensures evidence and property are correctly packaged, secured and protected
  • Maintains complete chain of custody of evidence.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of evidence inventoried.
  • Maintains security of evidence storage area.
  • Testifies in court as necessary.
  • Contacts owners to claim released property and releases property on receipt of proof of ownership; retrieves and releases evidence for lab work, investigation or court purposes.
  • Documents such releases.
  • Packs, labels and stores evidence to assure safeguarding for prosecution purposes.
  • Keeps storage areas neat and orderly.
  • Rearranges storage spaces as necessary.
  • Responsible and knowledgeable for the proper storage and handling of hazardous items that could include weapons, narcotics, drug paraphernalia, poisons, body fluids, flammable and explosive materials, currency, and unsanitary materials.
  • OTHER DUTIES INCLUDE: Performs other duties as assigned, which may include:
  • Maintaining of animal resources records, sex offender registrations, vin inspections, fingerprinting, and assist office personnel.
  • Cares for and stores equipment.
  • Use of computer for time card entry.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Possess excellent computer skills for data input; retrieval process, and management of computer inventory, and possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to learn applicable federal, state and local criminal and civil laws, codes and regulations as they pertain to records and evidence management.
  • Ability to learn and maintain City law enforcement department policies and procedures.
  • Possess skills for safety measures, methods and practices involved in the handling and storage of firearms, weapons, narcotics, drug, money, and dangerous devices.
  • Ability to maintain legible, complete and accurate records and related documents.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize work assignments and exhibit initiative.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials and the public.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • Will be required to successfully pass a criminal background check, pre-employment drug test and physical exam. 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Any combination of training and education equivalent to graduation from high school. Experience in a records program and evidence/property room environment is desirable.
  • Will be required to become and maintain NCIC/CCIC Certification, records and sex offender certification, records management certifications, and deputized for VIN inspections. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Proficient in English. Other languages helpful.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Basic Math skills.

  • Ability to read, hear and talk in person and by telephone and two-way radio.
  • Ability to see, and read records, reports and other information.
