SUMMARY

This position is a big part in creating the City of Delta’s overall positive experience for the City residence and visitor by performs a wide variety of unskilled/skilled maintenance and construction work on city parks, cemetery and other public facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Manual labor as required for the day to day upkeep and repairs for the City.
  • Assisting in the performance of semi-skilled and skilled work as needed.
  • Works with hand tools necessary to fill graves, spray weeds, mow grass, irrigate parks and cemetery.
  • Operate weed cutters, riding mowers, dump truck and pickup truck as needed.
  • Run hand power equipment including power mowers, compactors and chain saws.
  • Paint miscellaneous equipment used in the operation of the department.
  • Flag traffic as needed.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and general public.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and skill in the safe work practices in the operation of light equipment, power tools and in safe methods of performing maintenance and construction work.
  • Perform moderate/heavy physical work.
  • Possess hand/eye/foot coordination to operate equipment.
  • Talk and hear in person and by radio.
  • Ability to see and read instructions, prepare reports and make repairs.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma.
  • Six months of general labor experience preferred.
  • Experience with labor hand tools.
  • Experience with power tools a plus.
  • Experience with driving a dump truck or other large motor vehicles a plus.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License.
  • Must successfully pass a background check and pre-employment drug test.
  • Must be able to work afternoon/evening shifts (starting times will vary).

Additional requirements for this Job Opening:

 

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule with hours that vary day-to-day (Monday-Saturday with occasional Sundays) based on program schedules. This includes early mornings, days, nights, weekends, and some holidays.
  • During busy seasons the candidate can expect to work 30-40 hour/week. During the off-season and breaks between programs the candidate can expect to work 15 hours or less/week. This may include work with other Parks projects as needed under the supervision of the Parks Manager.
  • Candidate should possess good time management skills, be self-motivated and task oriented, willing to accept training, and be able to work in a variety of weather conditions including hot summer temperatures.
  • Candidate will be responsible for the maintenance and preparation of recreation sports fields/parks which includes baseball/softball, soccer, and flag football. These duties include but are not limited to: dragging infields, chalking and striping fields, infield and turf maintenance/repairs, picking up trash, pulling/spraying weeds, cleaning bathrooms, mowing, weed trimming, and other duties as assigned.
